Unidentified criminals abducted a union parishad (UP) chairman and local Awami League leader from Poddar Bazar in Laxmipur Sadar upazila on Saturday night. The victim is Abul Kashem Jihadi, chairman of Boshikpur Union Parishad. Protesting the incident, the supporters of Kashem halted vehicular movements on Dhaka-Laxmipur Road and other roads in the area for four hours from 10:00am yesterday. They also staged a demonstration in the town and damaged at least 20 vehicles in the morning. During the vandalism, at least 20 people were injured. Police and locals said a gang of criminals picked up Kashem at gunpoint from the market at around 11:00pm. Golam Sarwar, officer-in-charge of Laxmipur Sadar Police Station, said they have launched a drive to rescue the UP chairman and nab the abductors. District Awami League leaders and the chairmen of other union parishads in the upazila yesterday demanded that the law enforcers rescue the abducted UP chairman within the next 48 hours. Otherwise, they threatened to launch a tougher agitation programme in the district.
