'Jiner achhor' took the girl's life
The sad end of a girl, a victim of superstition, published in this daily on August 30 2012, has touched my heart.
The report tells of a 13-year-old girl who committed suicide because her parents were trying to marry her off forcibly to a 31-year-old illiterate man. We came to know from the report that it was a witch doctor who motivated the girl's parents to arrange this marriage in order to drive away the evil spirit from her.
Science could not yet prove whether there is any such thing like “jiner achhor” or not.
Such belief persists among people of different faiths. Even Hollywood produced the movie “The Exorcism of Emily Rose,” where a girl gets possessed by an evil spirit and eventually dies.
Unfortunately, there are many such witch doctors in our rural areas. And they are very active in their sinister business. It is high time the authorities acted and framed a law and save uncountable potential victims in the future.
