Canada's Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) gave the Aquarium des Iles permission to release the two six-month-old harp seal pups who were to be put down on September 15. The decision was taken on 21st September 2012 following appeal from the Care2 members and other animal lover groups plus press coverage. It may be mentioned here that one of the letters of this writer on this issue was published recently in these columns. It is sincerely hoped that killing of harp seals for commercial gains would stop.
