Girl children are neglected mainly due to a lack of knowledge and education, said noted singer and children's rights activist Rezwana Chowdhury Bonna at a programme on children's rights yesterday. Last December in Bangladesh, the United Nations proposed a day for the girl child and decided that October 11 will be observed as the International Day of the Girl Child. In observance of the day for the first time and the children's rights week 2012, the weeklong programme was inaugurated at Bangladesh Shishu Academy in the capital. At the event hosted by the academy, Bonna also said there has to be a social change from grass roots level to change the mindset of Bangladeshis about girl children. Secretary-in-charge to Ministry of Women and Children Affairs Tariqul Islam said the government is taking appropriate measures to stop violence against girl children. Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury, state minister for women and children affairs ministry, and Dr Latifa Akand, vice-president of National Girl Child Advocacy Forum, also spoke at the programme. Besides, a procession with the slogan “Success of Girl Child: Progress of Bangladesh” was brought out from the National Museum to the Shishu Academy.
