At the traffic intersections and on different streets of the capital one would find young vendors selling popcorns. Popcorn has now become a part of our life. No matter whether we buy it from the street vendors or prepare it in our homes, majority of us eat popcorn. Well, popcorn is a type of maize which when heated puffs up and we eat them as popped corns. Popcorn when prepared without any additive is a nutritious low fat and low calorie food. Usually we consume popcorn as a snack. Popcorn is rich in dietary fibre and contains no sugar or sodium. Of course when prepared on commercial basis certain flavouring agents, such as diacetyl, butter and sugar are added which are not good for human health, rather these are harmful. So it is better to prepare popcorn at home using paper bag in microwave oven. Children below 4 years should not be given popcorn because of the risk of choking. There is hulless popcorn developed for children. Genetically modified popcorn should be avoided for any possible allergic reaction or other health hazards.
