Road crashes kill 7

Seven people were killed and five others injured in separate road accidents in Sirajganj, Chittagong, Chapainawabganj, Tangail, Brahmanbaria and Jessore on Sunday and yesterday. Our Sirajganj correspondent reports, two women were killed as a truck ran them over on Hatikumrul-Bonpara highway near Goza Bridge in Salanga area of Sirajganj district on Sunday evening. The deceased were identified as Fazila Khatun, 35, wife of Ali Akbar and Joly Khatun, 33, wife of Nazrul Islam of Bahirgola Maholla in Sirajganj municipal area. Hatikumrul Highway Police Station Sub-Inspector Jahangir Alam said a Dhaka-bound speeding truck from Rajshahi crushed them while they were crossing the road, killing Fazila instantly. Joly died on the way to a hospital. Our staff correspondent from Chittagong reports, a garment worker was killed as a minibus knocked her at Saltgola in the port city yesterday morning. The deceased was identified as Priyanka Das, 20, daughter of Anil Das, hailing from Khagrachhari district. The minibus hit Priyanka when she attempted to cross the road in front of Seamen's hostel in the area at around 8:30am yesterday, said Bandar Police Station Sub-Inspector Mizanur Rahman. Local people rushed her to Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH) where the on-duty doctor pronounced her dead, said Nayek Joynal Abedin of the CMCH police outpost. Police seized the minibus while the driver managed to flee, said the SI. Our Chapainawabganj correspondent reports, an elderly man was killed as a Bhutbhuti hit him on Kansat-Bholahat road at Roghunathpur village in Shibganj upazila of the district yesterday morning. The deceased was identified as Aiyb Ali, 92, of the village in Mobarokpur union. Shibganj Police Station Sub-Inspector Mamunur Rashid said the accident occurred at around 5:30am when the Bhutbhuti (human hauler), knocked Aiyb while he was crossing the road near his house, killing him on the spot. Our Tangail correspondent reports, a schoolboy died when a bus ran him over on Ghatail-Sagardighi road in Makrai area of Ghatail upazila of Tangail district yesterday. The deceased was Rony Talukder, 12, a class VII student of Dhalapara Adarsha Bidyalaya, and son of Lutfar Rahman of Purua Palima village in Kalihati upazila. Ahadul Islam, sub-inspector of Ghatail Police Station, said the bus crushed Rony while he was crossing the road in the area at around 1:00am, killing him instantly. Our Brahmanbaria correspondent reports, one person was killed and five others were injured as a bus hit a CNG-run auto-rickshaw from the opposite direction on Comilla-Sylhet highway at Dharker village in Akhaura upazila of the district on Sunday night. The deceased was Md Rubel Mia, the auto-rickshaw driver, 25, of Bhadughar village in Brahmanbaria pourasabha. Police sources said the CNG-run auto-rickshaw, with five passengers, was going to Brahmanbaria from Kasba, the speeding bus dashed it from opposite direction, leaving the auto-rickshaw driver dead on the spot and injuring the five others. UNB from Jessore (Benapole), a boy, who was injured as a human-hauler turned turtle at Bagachra in Sharsha upazila on Sunday afternoon, died yesterday morning. The victim was identified as Raju, 3, son of Hamidur Rahman of Kazir Kaiba village in the upazila.
