'Urban dev imbalance causes inequality'

Urban development in Bangladesh is going on in an unbalanced way leading to unequal economic development, experts told a seminar yesterday. Bangladesh Institute of Planners (BIP) organsied the seminar on "Changing Cities: Building Opportunities" to mark World Habitat Day on its premises in the capital with BIP President Prof Golam Rahman in the chair. "Urbanisation is an opportunity and blessing but it may turn into a curse if unplanned," said Prof AKM Abul Kalam of Jahangirnagar University. Of a total of around 40 million urban populations, 40 percent live in Dhaka alone, he said, while the country's municipalities have not had their master plans yet. Prof Rokhsana Hafiz, head of urban and regional planning of Buet, and Brac University VC Prof Ainun Nishat also spoke.
