BNP's mass procession Wednesday for CG
The opposition BNP will organise processions at all district and divisional headquarters on Wednesday as part of its month-long mass campaign for the restoration of the caretaker government system.
The procession in the capital will begin at 3:00pm from the BNP's central office in Naya Paltan.
"We will organise a peaceful procession. I hope the government will not try to obstruct it," BNP standing committee member Nazrul Islam Khan told reporters yesterday after a joint meeting with the leaders of the party and its front bodies at the Naya Paltan office.
Meanwhile, addressing a commemorative programme at the Diploma Engineers Institution, BNP standing committee member Moudud Ahmed alleged that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina had not taken any action to quell the violence in Ramu though she was informed about it soon after the attacks went underway.
He also struck back at the prime minister, who on Friday castigated the BNP's probe body and its report on the Ramu incident. “The government is trying to draw the attention of the international community by using the slogan of militancy in the Ramu violence,” claimed the senior BNP leader.
The BNP probe body, led by Moudud, has blamed the government for the incident and demanded a judicial enquiry led by a retired judge.
He said the prime minister attacked him “personally” because the BNP had released its investigation report.
Moudud said there were 14 corruption cases against Hasina, which she had managed to get withdrawn after assuming power in 2009. "Had the trials been held lawfully, she might have been awarded 108 years of imprisonment," he said.
About the PM's comments on eminent personalities, including Dr Muhammad Yunus, he said Awami League supporters also sometimes felt embarrassed owing to her “disgraceful” comments.
The programme was organised in memory of eminent journalist Ataus Samad and former BNP lawmaker Sayeed Iskander, the latter being the brother of party chairperson Khaleda Zia.
