SIC resolution backs Dhaka's proposal

Bangladesh's draft Project Concept Paper (PCP) for establishing a permanent Saarc News Agency has been incorporated in the resolution of the 8th Governing Board of Saarc Information Centre (SIC) held in Nepal on September 25-26. The resolution is aimed at taking a decision on the issue after holding discussions at different levels of Saarc. BSS City Editor Ajit Kumar Sarkar gave the proposal for establishing the Saarc News Agency (SNA) at a seminar in Paro of Bhutan on May 29-31. Describing inclusion of the PCP in the resolution as a positive development, Director General (Saarc and Bimstec) Syed Masud Mahmud said, “I will discuss the issue at the DG-level meeting of the Saarc countries to be held in November this year.” Officials at SIC said representative of Bangladesh submitted the PCP informally, and it has been included in the resolution as all members of the Governing Board (GB) of SIC supported it. The GB asked the Bangladesh representative to submit the PCP taking approval from the proper authorities, the said. The GB also recommended that the SIC should work out a mechanism for obtaining relevant information from the member states, Saarc Secretariat and Saarc Regional Centres on regular basis to make the centre as an information hub for the Saarc countries. Information Secretary Hedaetullah Al Mamoon told the news agency that the draft proposal for establishing a permanent Saarc News Agency (SNA) will formally be sent to Saarc Information Centre soon. “The scrutiny of the proposal is at the final stage. We will send it to the Saarc Information Centre as soon as possible,” he told the news agency.
