Road crashes kill five

Five people were killed and three others injured in separate road accidents in Dhaka, Khulna and Sylhet yesterday. Our staff correspondent reports, a woman was killed after a bus hit her in the capital's Gulistan area yesterday noon. The victim was Safia Begum, 50, a street hawker, of Rupganj in Narayanganj. Paltan police said Safia was hit by the bus while she was crossing the road in front of Golap Shah Mazar. She was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where she died around 2:00pm. Locals caught the bus driver Alamgir Bhuiya, 60, and handed him over to the police. Police also seized the bus. A correspondent from Khulna reports, two women were killed and three others injured as a bus hit them on Khulna-Satkhira highway in Chuknagar traffic island area of Dumuria upazila yesterday morning. The deceased were Nazma Begum, 45, wife of Goni Khan and Latifa Begum, 50, wife of Surman Khan, hailing from Keshobpur upazila in Jessore. Nazma died instantly while Latifa on the way to Khulna Medical College Hospital. The injured Hazer Sheikh, 45, Mazedul Islam, 18, and Ramprasad Roy, 30, of the same area, were admitted to the hospital. Our staff correspondent from Sylhet reports, two motorcyclists died instantly as a bus hit them on Dhaka-Sylhet highway at Ainpur in Nabiganj upazila yesterday morning. The deceased were Shahbaj Chowdhury, 52, and Sujon Miah, 40, of village Sadarghat in the upazila. Angry locals put up barricades on the highway in the area for about two hours.
