A man has threatened to kill Chittagong Metropolitan Sessions Judge SM Mojibur Rahman if former state minister for home Lutfozzaman Babar is sentenced in the sensational 10-truck arms haul case. The judge received the death threat yesterday in a letter sent by one Md Shahid Mia from Mirpur in Dhaka. The Daily Star has obtained a copy of the letter. The letter said if the former BNP minister is sentenced with any “ulterior motives,” the judge will be killed wherever he stays by blowing up a remote-controlled bomb. Trial in two cases in connection with the arms haul is underway in Mojibur's court. Babar is one of the key accused in the cases. The judge lodged a GD with Kotwali police. Terming Babar their dearest leader from Netrakona, the letter said he was being ill-treated by the authorities in Kashimpur jail. Members of the Detective Branch of police disturb the accused when his family members visit him in the jail. He is even compelled to stand for hours in the court. Shahid further mentioned that if Babar is not taken to Chittagong by an air-conditioned car next time and the “mockery trial” is not stopped, the judge will be killed. “A piece of a shroud is sent with this notice. You will be a judge in the High Court in future, but we [people of Netrakona] won't let your dream come true, because you want to sentence Mr Babar abruptly,” read the letter. A sketch of a person was also enclosed with the letter. Contacted, Kamal Uddin Ahmed, Chittagong metropolitan public prosecutor, said, “The followers of Babar have chosen a different path to stop the trial.” CMP Commissioner Shafiqul Islam said police will investigate this matter and proper security measures will be taken to ensure safety of the judge.
