Road accidents kill seven

Seven people were killed and 22 others injured in road accidents in four districts on Thursday and yesterday. Our Sylhet correspondent says, three persons, including two medical college students, were killed and 20 other students injured as a bus skidded off Dhaka-Sylhet highway near Notunbazar in Nabiganj upazila on Thursday midnight. The dead, Mainuddin Khan of Luxmipur district and Shahidul Islam of Feni, were the students of Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College, while Abdul Mazid, 30, of village Sadarghat in the upazila. Police said a group of 20 MBBS students were travelling to Chittagong by the bus which hit Mazid and skidded off the road,as its driver lost control over the steering, killing him and Mainuddin instantly. Shahidul was declared dead at the hospital. Agitating locals later vandalised several buses. Our Mymensingh correspondent reports, two persons were killed and two others injured as a bus hit a pickup from the opposite direction on Dhaka-Mymensingh highway at Kanthali village in Bhaluka upazila yesterday. The dead were the pickup driver Ripon Miah, 40, and his passenger Umed Ali, 65. The injured were admitted to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital. Injured Sekul, 35, and Hashim Uddin, 52, were undergoing treatment at the hospital. Our staff correspondent from Chittagong reports, a youth was killed as a truck ran him over while he was crossing Dhaka-Chittagong highway in front of Kashem Jute Mills of Kadam Rasul area in Sitakunda upazila of Chittagong yesterday early morning. The deceased identified as Mohammed Shaon Hawladar, 27, son of Hashem Howladar, was hailing from Niamoti village in Bakerganj upazila of Barisal district. Shaon was rushed to Chittagong Medical College Hospital where the on-duty doctor declared him dead, said the hospital outpost police. Our Magura correspondent reports, a bicyclist schoolboy was killed as a pickup van knocked him down on Magura-Sreepur road near Khamarpara graveyard in Sreepur upazila yesterday. The deceased Sabbir Hossain, 11, son of Rozdar Hossain of Tupipara village, was a class V student of the government primary school in the village of Sreepur upazila. Angered by the death, agitating people detained the driver, set the pickup to fire and blocked the road for about one hour.
