China to initiate negotiations
CPC leader tells Khaleda

The Chinese government will take the initiative to set up a meeting among China, Bangladesh and Myanmar on establishing direct rail and road links between Chittagong and Kunming. A top-ranking Communist Party of China (CPC) leader, Li Changchun, said this during a call on by an-eight member BNP delegation led by BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia in the capital's Sonargaon Hotel yesterday. “As part of regional connectivity, China is giving priority to establish the direct rail and road communication via Myanmar,” BNP Vice President Shamsher Mobin Chowdhury told journalists after the call on. China also reiterated its commitment to help construct the second Padma bridge and a deep-sea port in Sonadia, said the former foreign secretary. Li Changchun, member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of CPC Central Committee, also informed Khaleda that China would continue assisting Bangladesh modernise its railway and road infrastructure, he said. During the 45-minute meeting from 3:30pm, Khaleda and Li Changchun emphasised close cooperation between CPC and BNP. Li Changchun, arriving in Dhaka on Saturday with an eight-member high-powered delegation for a two-day visit at the invitation of the ruling Awami League, also visited North South University's Confucius Institute where he was given a red-carpet reception.The Chinese delegation presented a statue of Chinese philosopher Confucius to the institute.
