Alleges Bangladesh Physiotherapy Society

Patients are being deprived of proper physiotherapy treatment as some quacks, technicians and diploma holders in medicine have been providing the treatment without having necessary skill, expertise and experience in the treatment in Chittagong, according to leaders of Bangladesh Physiotherapy Society (BPS). Despite not having any physiotherapy graduate or government registered physiotherapists, at least 30 physiotherapy centres and physiotherapy units at some hospitals have been providing the treatment in the port city, they said. These observations were made at a press conference styled "Physiotherapy Treatment, Education and Current Context" organised by the BPS at Chittagong Press Club yesterday. BPS Vice President Dr Md Kamruzzaman and its member Dr Shimul Das, among others, spoke on the occasion. Out of total 253 registered physiotherapists in the country, only 19 therapists provide the treatment at different centres and hospitals in Chittagong division, they said. Around 40 NGOs, which mainly work with autistic people, are operating physiotherapy centres by lab technicians violating the form of the treatment, they added. With the help of some officials at District Civil Surgeons' Office in Chittagong, the malpractice of deceiving patients in the name of physiotherapy goes unchecked, they claimed. They demanded that the government takes proper measures to stop the centres and creates public awareness in this regard. They also urged the government to establish a physiotherapy college in Chittagong, and form an independent national physiotherapy council soon.
