Road accidents kill 14, injure 17

Fourteen people were killed and 17 others injured in separate road accidents in Sylhet, Moulvibazar, Chittagong, Bogra, Laxmipur, Sirajganj and Chuadanga on Wednesday and yesterday. Our staff correspondent from Sylhet reports, a Dhaka-bound coach of Ena Paribahan from Sylhet collided head-on with an auto-rickshaw on Dhaka-Sylhet highway in Nij Parua area of Osmaninagar at about 2:00pm yesterday, killing four and injuring two of the auto-rickshaw passengers. The identities of the deceased could not be ascertained immediately, said Osmaninagar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Zubayer Ahmed. The injured were taken to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital. In another accident, two labourers were killed and four others injured as a stone-laden truck overturned on Sylhet-Tamabil highway near Jafflong Bazar in Gowainghat upazila yesterday afternoon. One of the deceased was Aminul Islam. The injured were admitted to the hospital. UNB adds, a woman was killed and two others injured as a truck of Bangladesh Air Force hit a rickshaw on Dhaka-Sylhet highway near bridge No-1 in Srimangal upazila of Moulvibazar district on Wednesday noon. The deceased was Siratunnessa, 38, wife of Mokhlesur Rahman. Our staff correspondent from Chittagong reports, Ataul Karim Azad, 50, of Rangunia, was killed and three others were injured as a bus hit a tree beside Kaptai road at Kalibari gate of Noapara area yesterday morning. The injured Taskia Tahsin, 22, and Tasfia Islam, 22, students of Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (Cuet), and Munshi Alam, 40, were taken to Chittagong Medical Collage Hospital. Meanwhile, a motorcyclist was killed and his co-rider was injured as a car hit their motorbike on Surson road in Chittagong city yesterday evening. The deceased was Touhidul Hoque, 24, son of Jahedul Hoque of Joynagar in the city. The injured Md Alif, 25, son of Abu Taher of the same area, was taken to Chittagong Medical College Hospital. Our Bogra correspondent reports, a motorcycle rider died as a coach ran him over on Dhaka-Bogra highway at Goghapara Bottola in Sherpur upazila of Bogra on Wednesday afternoon. The victim was Saimur Rahman, 34, son of Sayed Ali of Masimpur village in Porsha upazila of Noagaon district. UNB from Laxmipur reports, a lorry hit a rickshaw at Shakchor in sadar upazila on Wednesday night that killed rickshaw-puller Hossain Ahmed, 35, instantly and injured two others. Meanwhile, Suma, 8, daughter of Abdus Sattar of Paniwala in Ramganj upazila, died after she was run over by a truck while crossing a road near her home in Paniwala area at around 6:30pm on Wednesday. UNB from Sirajganj reports, a motorcyclist was killed and his co-rider injured when a truck crushed into their vehicle in Sadar upazila yesterday morning. The deceased was Mostafa, 40, son of Mokbul Hossain of Fulkocha village in the upazila. The injured Shah Jamal, 35, of the same village, was admitted to Bogra Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital. UNB from Chuadanga reports, motorcyclist Biplob Hossain, 26, son of Aminul Islam of Farmpara of sadar upazila, died as a truck hit him at Shatgari village in the upazila on Wednesday evening.
