7 police impersonators held in capital

Detective Branch (DB) of Police has arrested seven members of a gang of police impersonators from the capital's Uttara area. They also recovered a wireless set, handcuffs and a microbus from their possession. The arrestees were Md Gazi Helal Uddin, Abu Bakkat Siddique, Ripon Miah, Abdul Barek, Titu Miah, Mokbul Dhali, Maruf Hossain. DB officials said the arrestees have been involved in various criminal activities like kidnapping, mugging and threatening people in the guise of detectives. They used to carry wireless sets and handcuffs similar to those used by DB personnel, they said. DB Additional Deputy Commissioner Ashiqur Rahman said they arrested the members of the gang when they were waiting outside a bank with a microbus to kidnap people withdrawing money at Abdullahpur on Tuesday afternoon. "The gang has informants who keep an eye on branches of banks and ATM booths," he said. They used to kidnap the people who withdrew money from the banks or ATM booths; and put them into their car identifying themselves as DB personnel, he said. Later, they used to drop the people on footpaths from the moving vehicle after the money is snatched, he added. During primary interrogation, the arrestees said they collected the wireless sets from a shop at Baitul Mukarram market and the handcuffs from Polwel Super Market in Paltan, the DB official said. Detectives have also detained a shop owner at Baitul Mukarram market for interrogation. Last month police arrested four DB impersonators from the capital's Kakrail with handcuffs and wireless sets.
