Border Killings
Govt to see if BSF breached consensus on no firing: MKA
Home Minister MK Alamgir yesterday said they would investigate whether India's Border Security Force (BSF) breached the consensus that the border forces of Bangladesh and India would not open fire except in the case of self-defence.
He made the remark in reply to a query of journalists after addressing the daylong 23rd anniversary celebration programme of the Department of Narcotics Control (DNC) at the capital's Tejgaon.
The journalists questioned the home minister about the killing of two cattle traders by BSF early yesterday inside Indian territory, which borders Gomostapur upazila of Chapainawabganj.
"In many cases, smugglers resort to firearms and that is why the border guards of both the countries have been directed to open fire only for their self-defence."
He said, "During a visit to India last month, I talked to the Indian home minister about border killings and agreed in principle that none of the border forces would open fire unless it is a case of self-defence."
However, the home minister said, "We are investigating the incidents. If it is found that the shooting took place for other reasons, we must take proper measures."
