District BNP yesterday called off its dawn-to-dusk hartal called for today, demanding the release of the party's central leader Ruhul Kuddus Talukdar Dulu. Aminul Haque, district BNP general secretary, announced the decision after a meeting at the party office at Alaipur in the town yesterday noon. The BNP leader said the decision was taken considering people's sufferings. Earlier the leaders of the district unit BNP on Tuesday announced the shutdown while addressing a rally, which was held marking the founding anniversary of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD), student wing of BNP, in the town. Dulu, also the president of BNP Natore district unit, was arrested from his residence in the town on December 8 last year for his alleged involvement in a gunfight on the same night that left Jubo League leader Palash Karmer dead. On December 10, BNP observed a daylong hartal in Natore, demanding release of Dulu. Palash, joint convener of Jubo League town unit, sustained bullet injuries during a gunfight between the activists of BNP and Jubo League near district BNP office at Alaipur in the town. He was admitted to Natore Sadar Hospital and then shifted to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries on 11 December. Police produced Dulu in the Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate's Court on 13 December. After a hearing, Chief Judicial Magistrate Dr. MA Mazid granted one day's remand for Dulu. He also rejected Dulu's bail prayer.
