Staff Correspondent, Ctg
A Chittagong court yesterday sent to jail 26 leaders and activists of BNP, Jamaat-e-Islami and Islami Chhatra Shibir after rejecting their bail petitions in a case filed for vandalism and torching of vehicles on December 9, 2012. Meanwhile, another Chittagong court denied bail prayers of 58 Jamaat-Shibir activists, now behind bars, in three different cases filed with Panchlaish Police Station for assaults on police by Jamaat-Shibir activists on November 18. On December 9, the BNP-led 18-party alliance enforced a countrywide blockade programme to realise their demand for restoration of the caretaker government system. A total of 32 persons were accused in the first case, filed with Sitakunda Police Station under the speedy trial act. Of the 58 activists, 38 are Chittagong Medical College students, arrested from the college hostel, while the rest are doctors and bankers and other professionals, arrested from different Chittagong city areas. A total of 65 Jamaat-Shibir activists by name and 122 unidentified people were accused in the three cases.
