Gambler shot by ASI allegedly for toll

An assistant sub-inspector of Ruhea police outpost in the town shot and injured an alleged gambler at Ghonimoheshpur Prodhanpara village under Sadar upazila on Saturday mid-night. Sub-inspector also in-charge of Ruhea police outpost Nazmul Hasan said a team of police led by ASI Shamim HOssain went to the house of Illiyas Ali to catch a gang of gamblers. But to avoid arrests, the gang attacked the law-enforcers. In retaliation, ASI Shamim opened fire leaving Illiyas critically injured. Later, locals took Illiyas to Thakurgaon Sadar Hospital. Replying to a query about the allegation that Shamim went to the spot to collect illegal toll from the gamblers Nazmul said he am not aware about such matter. Contacted, superintended of police Faisal Mahmud told this correspondent that a two-member committee headed by assistant superintendent of police Saidur Rahman was formed to probe the allegation and it was asked to submit report within three days. Replying a question the that ASI Shamim was yet to be closed or suspended. He is under watch, he said.
