Remove IU treasurer also, demand teachers
Fresh agitation from today
After fresh appointment of a vice chancellor and pro-vice chancellor at Islamic University (IU), the teachers association is now demanding removal of the treasurer.
The teachers yesterday announced that they would stage an indefinite token hunger on the campus from today to press the demand.
The authorities concerned relieved vice-chancellor Prof M Alauddin and pro- vice chancellor Prof M Kamal Uddin of their duties on December 27 and January 1 to end the four-month-long deadlock at the university.
Prof M Alauddin was replaced by Prof Abdul Hakim Sarkar of Dhaka University. None was appointed to the post of pro-vice chancellor as of yesterday.
Academic activities at the university came to a halt as the teachers of the university under the banner of Islamic University Teachers Association (IUTA) started agitation on September 8 last year, demanding removal of the then vice-chancellor Prof M Alauddin, pro-vice chancellor Prof M Kamal Uddin and Treasurer Prof Md Shahjahan Ali for their alleged involvement in irregularities in the recruitment of 132 teachers and officials on September 7.
General students of the university also staged demonstrations on the campus in December last year demanding resumption of their classes and examinations. The classes will, however, resume today.
“We will continue our agitation until the treasurer is removed†said Prof Yakub Ali, president of Islamic University Teachers Association (IUTA).
The newly appointed vice chancellor is expected to sit with the leaders of the teachers association today to break the deadlock.
