Garbage dumping turns Bogra railway station area stinky

Frequent dumping of garbage in front of Bogra Railway Station has polluted the environment in and around the area. Around 18 trains pass through the station every day and thousands of passengers, who arrive here and travel to elsewhere in the country from the district, face unhygienic situation due to bad smell coming from piled up rubbish. Passengers lodged complaints to the station master several times, but to no effect. Some passengers of Lalmonirhat-bound “Padmarag †train said the environment of the station has become polluted. “We want to get rid of this situation,†they added. Another passenger of Bonarpara-bound train said the authorities concerned should immediately take necessary steps to stop dumping of garbage in front of the railway station. An employee of the station on condition of anonymity said the household garbage from the nearby ward is thrown here and the people work in the department concerned of the municipality are responsible for causing a public nuisance on the station premises. Station Master Benjurul Islam said he had sent letters to the mayor several times, urging him not to dump garbage in front of the station. “The municipality authorities did not pay heed to the request,†he said. Arshadul Bari Arshad, ex-Commissioner of Ward No 8, said railway station is not a garbage dumping area. He held the municipality authorities responsible for polluting the environment in and around the station. Despite repeated attempts, ward commissioner Ibrahim Hossain could not be reached over cellphone for his comments on the issue. In the absence of elected Mayor advocate Mahbubur Rahman, panel mayor Parimal Chandra said they have arranged an alternative dumping spot and will remove the garbage from the railway station area soon.
