A huge tailback that lasted for about 10 hours on the both ends of Bangabandhu Bridge yesterday caused untold miseries to hundreds of passengers. The traffic congestion was created when a Dhaka-bound rice-laden truck from the north side broke down near 4 no pillar on the bridge at around 1:00am, said highway police. The authorities removed the truck in a hour. But a head-on collision between a truck and covered van on the bridge at around 5:00am worsened the situation again. Hundreds of vehicles in a 30-kilometere tailback remained stranded on the both ends of the bridge till the truck and van were removed around 6:00am, said police. The tailback stretched to Rabna Bypass in Tangail, east side of toll plaza from Nokla in Sirajganj, west side of the plaza of the bridge before easing off around 11:00am, said Kamruzzaman Raz, sub-inspector of highway police at Elenga outpost. Repair work that was continuing on a lane of the bridge narrowed it down, adding to the situation, he said. Sekander Ali, a student of Rajshahi University, said their Dhaka-bound bus remained stranded on the west side of the toll plaza and it took five hours to cross the bridge.
