Police sue 170 Jubo Dal men

Police on Tuesday filed two separate cases against 170 leaders and activists of local Jubo Dal, youth wing of main opposition BNP. They lodged the cases in connection with attacking police, torching and vandalising motorbikes and battery-run auto-rickshaws during the 8-hour-long hartal in the district on Monday last. The hartal was called demanding immediate withdrawal of all 'false' cases against the party central leaders including its acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir. Around 11:30am on Monday, leaders and activists of Jubo Dal brought out a procession in Payra Chattar area in the city. At one stage, the pro-hartal activists beat up police constable Abul Kalam and torched a motor-bike in Central Road area near Payra Chattar. During the incidents, police charged baton to disperse them from the spot. At that time some pickets vandalised a motorbike of Moinul Islam, photo-journalist of daily Prothom Alo while he was taking snaps at Payra Chattar in the city. On Tuesday, police lodged two separate cases with Rangpur Kotwali police station against 170 Jubo Dal leaders and activists. In the cases, police mentioned names of 25 leaders and activists and kept 60 unidentified. Police also mentioned Roich Ahmed, assistant central secretary of Jubo Dal Rangpur divisional unit and president of Jubo Dal Rangpur district unit, as the main accused in both cases. Police said they have already launched a drive to arrest them. They earlier arrested six leaders and activists on Tuesday. They arrestees are Yasir Arafat Jibon, Sports Secretary of Jubo Dal Rangpur district unit and activists Jane Alam, Rasheduzzaman, Mizanur Rahman Mizan, Abu Bakkar Rajon and Mojammel Haque.
