Body formed to probe Thursday's 'acid throwing'

Agitating teachers, students, officers and employees of Begum Rokeya University formed a human chain in front of Rangpur Press Club yesterday, protesting the attack on the teachers and students of the university on the campus on Thursday and demanding exemplary punishment to the culprits involved. Under the banner of “Durniti Birodhi Mancha”, leaders and activists of different socio-political and cultural organisations of Rangpur also joined the programme that continued for two hours from 12:00noon. Addressing a rally at the venue, the agitating teachers and students reiterated their demand for resignation of Vice Chancellor Prof Muhammad Abdul Jalil Miah, accusing him of being corrupt. They urged President Zillur Rahman, also chancellor of the university, and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to take immediate step to remove the vice chancellor. The teachers and students of the university have been agitating since January 7 demanding resignation of the vice-Chancellor. On Thursday morning, unidentified criminals, reportedly Bangladesh Chhatra League activists, attacked the agitating teachers and students of the university in which seven teachers sustained burn injures from battery acid. Following the incident, the university authorities held a meeting at night presided over by Vice Chancellor Prof Muhammad Abdul Jalil Miah where they decided to close the university for an indefinite period. Later, the vice-chancellor at a press conference at his residence claimed that they had to close the university to bring the situation under control. PROBE BODY FORMED The authorities of Begum Rokeya University yesterday formed a three-member committee headed by Associate Professor Md Morshed Hossain of Economics department to investigate the January 10 incident on the campus. The two other members of the committee are Dr Abu Md Iqbal Rumi Shah and Dr Mohammad Nazmul Haque. The committee has been asked to submit its report within 10 working days. Two of the injured teachers--Tuhin Wadud, a lecturer of Bangla department, and Motiur Rahman, associate professor of management department- filed a case Rangpur Kotwali police station on Friday in connection with the acid attack on some teachers on Thursday. Police arrested three BCL activists of Begum Rokeya University, raiding different areas of the city on Friday night on charge of their involvement in the acid attack. The arrestees are Mehedy Hasan Shishir, first year student of English department, Md Ali Raz, first year student of marketing department, and Hadiuzzaman, first year student of computer science and engineering department.
