Bamboo sticks have been distributed among the villagers in Bhangura upazila for self defense as law enforcers are not enough to resist the outlaws. The distribution of around 1,000 sticks was held at an anti-crime rally on Par Bhangura sports ground in the upazila on Friday afternoon. Earlier, an anti-crime unit was formed. The unit, made of locals and all political parties, held the rally. The rally was led by president of Par Bhangura union unit Awami League Abu Bakkar. Addressing the rally, the speakers said that the people of Hatgram, Modhugati, Kalikadah, and Bheramara villages in the union had been passing fearful days and sleepless nights for long because of the notorious operatives of the outlawed parties in the areas. They take away cash and other valuables from the villagers at gunpoint every night, they alleged. Although the law enforcing agencies were trying to resist the outlaws, the move to distribute bamboo sticks among the villagers has been taken as an additional measure, said Md Baki Billah, chairman of the upazila parishad. Among others, Par Bhangura union BNP president Abu Hossain and social worker Abdur Razzak, spoke. The villagers later brought out a procession in the union to consolidate their unity.
