Official suspended for assaulting truck driver
A retired army major, who has been serving as traffic and security manager of Bangabandhu Bridge, was suspended yesterday for attacking a truck driver and injuring him critically.
He was also fined Tk 10,000 for treating the injured driver. Police said the ex-major Hasanuzzaman hit driver Atikuzzaman with his wireless set.
Helaluzzaman, OC of Bangabandhu Bridge East Police Station, said a coal-laden truck from Dhaka reached the bridge's east side weight station around 8:00am. The truck was not allow to cross the bridge as it carried some extra weight. When its driver approached to the traffic manager over the issue, Hasanuzzaman hit his head with a wireless set as the driver called him "Chacha" (uncle), said the OC.
Being informed, truck union leaders from Tangail and Sirajganj went to the spot and demanded Hasanuzzaman's punishment.
Hasanuzzaman was employed by a joint venture comprising two Bangladeshi and one Chinese firm to operate the bridge.
Soon after his joining four months ago, he allegedly used to beat up drivers and smashed glasses of trucks. He also misbehaved with journalists, local people and the law enforcers. Despite retiring of his service, he used to wear army dress while on-duty at the bridge.
