Police Attack on Teachers
Agitators submit memo to NHRC chief
Law enforcers did a "condemnable" act by lobbing tear shells and spraying liquid gas on the agitating teachers and employees of non-MPO educational institutions, said National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Chairman Prof Mizanur Rahman yesterday.
He also urged law enforcers to refrain from such acts in future.
His comments came after the teachers and employees of non-MPO secondary schools, colleges, madrasas and technical educational institutions submitted a memorandum to him at his office in the capital yesterday.
The teachers and employees, under the banner of "Non-MPO Shikkha Pratishthan Shikkhak Karmachari Oikya Jote," have been agitating since Monday to press home their demand to include their educational institutions in the monthly payment order (MPO) list.
Esharat Ali, president of the Jote, said they submitted the memorandum to NHRC chairman after police barred their pre-scheduled sit-in programme on NHRC office premises around 11:00am yesterday and sprayed liquid gas to disperse them.
Prof Mizanur said he will meet the education minister and appeal for the teachers' demands.
Earlier on Wednesday, police lobbed tear shells and sprayed liquid gas on another demonstration of the teachers in the capital. Police also barred few other demonstrations of the teachers on Thursday and Friday.
