Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and Indian Border Security Force (BSF) yesterday agreed to stop killings and maintain peace at the border dividing Rajshahi and Baharampur, the headquarters of West Bengal's Murshidabad district. The sector commander level meeting was held at Sardaha Cadet College in Rajshahi where Rajshahi sector commander Col Sarker Muhammad Shamsuddin and India's Baharampur sector commander DIG RC Dhoni talked to journalists later. The issues of border killings, physical tortures on Bangladeshis, smuggling of drugs and goods, and intrusion came up at the three-hour discussion, said Col Shamsuddin, who led a 17-member BGB team. Both the sides agreed to maintain peace at the border and solve different border problems as per the India-Bangladesh border treaty, he added. The BSF commander, DIG Dhoni, said Rajshahi-Baharampur border was becoming a model, as no killing took place there from December 2011 to January 2013. Dhoni, however, said BSF took stern actions against some cross-border smugglers who attacked and injured BSF members during the said period. A 16-member BSF team took part in the meeting.
