January sees 446 incidents

Around 446 incidents of violence against women occurred in the country during last January, stated Bangladesh Mahila Parishad yesterday. Of the incidents, 125 were of rape, including 30 of gang rape, while 14 women were murdered after being raped. Four from around 39 women who were harassed or molested committed suicide afterwards while another 25 women committed suicide due to different kinds of violence inflicted on them. Two women were victims of acid attacks whilst 12 incidents of violence against domestic helps occurred where five women were murdered. Four of seven victims of domestic fire attacks were burned alive, 12 out of 31 women tortured for dowry were killed, and eight girls were victims of child marriage. One woman also fell victim to fatwa. Five incidents of police harassment, 27 incidents of kidnap and 24 incidents of different kinds of violence also occurred during this period. Apart from this, 62 women and children were murdered over various reasons. The legal aid sub-committee of Bangladesh Mahila Parishad collected these figures from reports in 14 newspapers, says a press release.
