'Stop tobacco farming in hills'

Speakers at a discussion yesterday urged the government to take steps to protect the forests and soil of Khagrachhari hill district from tobacco cultivation. Over two thousand acres of paddy land is used for tobacco cultivation in the district and the area is on the rise, they said at the discussion held on the premises of a high school in Sadar upazila in Khagrachhari. Tobacco cultivation reduces lands for paddy, vegetables and other useful crops and damages fertility of the soil while intake of the poisonous item causes many deadly diseases, they said. Emphasising proper implementation of the environmental law and making people aware of the situation, they urged the local environmental workers to work unitedly for saving the environment through their own efforts and using local resources. Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer Rahed Hossen presided over the discussion where Additional District Magistrate Monindra Kishor Majumder was present as chief guest. Earlier a colourful rally jointly organised by NGOs Parbatya Budda Mission, Trinamul Unnayan Sangstha, Ananda and Integrated Development Foundation marched the main roads of the hill town
