Satkhira workshop urges political parties
Speakers at a workshop here yesterday urged central leaders of political parties to prepare their election manifestoes after taking opinions of grassroots leaders on local issues.
Local development issues were ignored in the past as parties prepared their manifestoes without taking opinions of grassroots leaders, they said.
So, local people's aspirations were not reflected in election manifestoes and they were deprived.
The two-day workshop on 'Experience sharing with political parties at Pourasava level' under Sufia Kamal Leadership Fellow, jointly organised by Steps Towards Development, Swift Network, IRI and USAID, was held at Sadar upazila auditorium with Swapan Guha in the chair.
It was addressed by local leaders of Awami League, BNP, jatiya Party, jatiya Samajantrik Dal (JSD), NAP, Satkhira Chamber of Commerce and Industries representatives, journalists and representatives of the elite.
They urged political parties to include local development issues in their manifestoes so that problems of 18 lakh people of Satkhira can be solved by the next government.
The issues include re-excavate the Kabodak river, development of Bhomra land port to a full fledged port, setting up an agriculture university at Satkhira, steps to save bio-diversity of Sundarbans and setting up of a tourist centre at Munshiganj adjacent to the mangrove forest.
