Ex-BNP MP Akbar sent to jail

Former BNP lawmaker M Akbar Ali was sent to jail in an extortion case when he appeared before the court of District and Sessions Judge Biplab Goswami for bail yesterday. The judge issued the detention order against Akbal Ali, a former lawmaker of Ullapara constituency in Sirajganj district, in the extortion case lodged by BNP adherent Asadul Islam Dulal of Jhikira village in Ullapara upazila. Akbar demanded Tk 10 lakh as toll from Dulal and following the latter's non-compliance, Akbar's men attacked Dulal's house, ransacked furniture, looted valuables and beat up the family members on February 14 in 2005, goes the prosecution. Dulal lodged a case with Chief Judicial Magistrate's Court in Sirajganj on September 2 last year accusing 13 people including Akbar Ali.
