Ariful claims innocence in ACC case
Sylhet city BNP chief Ariful Haque Chowdhury during his examination in the graft case yesterday claimed himself innocent and said some vested quarters and his political opponents had influenced filing the 'baseless and motivated' case by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
Cross examination of the prosecution witnesses (PW) in the ACC-filed case against Ariful Haque Chowdhury and his wife Shama Haque Chowdhury (absconding) ended on Monday in Sylhet District and Sessions Judge's Court, also the special tribunal.
As the court yesterday asked whether the accused had anything to say about the prosecution charges, Ariful said Abdul Khalique, an expatriate from the UK, will give his statement as defence witness. The court accordingly fixed June 10 for examining the defence witness.
Cross-examination of the ACC's Assistant Director of the Comilla Regional office-Shahin Ara Mumtaj, also Investigation Officer of the case, was held as the last PW on Monday when examination and cross-examination of 26 prosecution witnesses ended.
