UNO foils 9 child marriages arranged by NGO
The upazila nirbahi officer of Sharnkhola in Bagerhat district yesterday prevented early marriages of nine girls.
Receiving information that Islahul Muslimin Parishad, a non-government organisation (NGO), arranged marriages of nine minor girls of Sidr-hit Rajeshwar village, UNO Shahnewaz Taluker rushed there and found that the girls with their parents were present in the well-decorated venue of the marriage ceremony.
Marriage registrars Ashraf Ali and Sarwar Hossain, who were invited to complete formalities, ran away when police reached there. , OC Rezaul Karim of Sharankhola Police Station said.
None of the NGO men could be contacted to know why they arranged early marriages of poor girls in the name of humanitarian work.
