2200 urea bags seized, 5 held
Bangladesh Coastguard seized a trawler carrying 2,200 sacks of urea fertiliser from Dakatia River near Chandpur riverport yesterday afternoon.
Acting on a tip off, the law enforcers seized the fertiliser worth Tk 320 a sack as it was being smuggled to Myanmar with the help of false chalan, cash memo etc, said police and coastguard sources.
The coastguard arrested five staff of the trawler and handed them over to Sadar Model Police Station.
The arrestees are -- Mainuddin Befari, 65, of Odiddha Sreeramdi in Chandpur Sadar, Ismail Hossain, 26, of South Tumchar in Ramgati in Laxmipur, Liton, 16, of Borokazi village in Lalmohon in Bhola, and Humayun Kabir, 35, and his brother Ripon, 16, of Char Algi under Ramgati upazila of Laxmipur.
An organised gang is allegedly engaged in smuggling fertiliser through river routes to Myanmar from Chandpur.
