The verdict in the case on recovery of 44 grenades will be delivered on Sunday. Hearing and arguments by the state and defence lawyers ended in the court of Judge Ashish Ranjan Das yesterday. The two charge-sheeted accused-- Huji (Harkatul Jihad) operatives Moin Uddin alias Abu Zandal and Nazrul Islam --were present at the court during the hearing. Abu Zandal was a close aide to Huji chief Mufti Hannan and was involved in the August 21 grenade attacks on an Awami League (AL) rally in Dhaka in 2004. Earlier on June 9, the court examined the accused under section 342 of Criminal Procedure Code. The accused however claimed innocence and the court fixed June 11 for argument of the case. Earlier, on May 29, the court framed charges against the two for possessing 44 grenades. Trial of the case resumed on June 4 with deposition of nine prosecution witnesses including complainant of the case Sub-inspector (SI) KM Tariqul Islam of Rab-6 Khulna. Huji operative Zandal was arrested from Gazipur on February 14. Acting on his confession, Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) arrested Nazrul Islam from Nalta Bazar in Kaliganj upazila in Satkhira, and on his confession, Rab recovered 44 grenades from a pond at Shimulia village in Debhata upazila on February 15. Sub-inspector (SI) Tariqul Islam of Rab-6 Khulna filed a case with Debhata police station accusing Abu Zandal and Nazrul Islam for possessing 44 grenades. The recovered 41 grenades were identical to those exploded in the August 21 blasts at AL rally.
