Body formed to identify people at risk
A six-member committee was formed at an urgent meeting held at Khagrachhari deputy commissioner's (DC) conference hall here yesterday to conduct a survey to identify people living in slopes of hills.
The committee is being led by additional deputy commissioner (ADC-Revenue) Masud Ahmed.
The committee was asked to submit its report along with a recommendation within one month of its formation.
Khagrachhari DC Mohammad Shahdat Hossain chaired the meeting.
Speakers at the meeting said about 15,000 families of eight upazilas in the hill district are at risk of landslide. This is because, they built houses, business establishment and other structures cutting hill without any environment-friendly plan, they said.
In the meantime, rainy season started, they said.
In such a situation, landslide may occur damaging life and property, they feared.
Among others, Sadar assistant commissioner (AC) of Land, Kaisar Hossain, The Daily Star Correspondent Jasim Majumder, sub-assistant rngineer of PWD, administrative officer of Khagrachhari Hill District Council and councilor of Khagrachhari municipality attended.
