Newsman gets bail in Kushtia
Journalist Munshi Torikul Islam who was arrested here by joint forcers on June 4, was granted bail yesterday, court sources said.
The judicial magistrate's court here granted the bail.
Police said Channel 1 staff correspondent Munshi Torikul was arrested from his Almapara house here following filing of a case by Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) executive engineer Nazrul Islam.
Introducing them as 'influential journalists,' Munshi Torikul and Faruk Ahmed Pinu, Kushtia correspondent of ntv went to his office on June 2, Nazrul alleged.
They demanded Tk 1 lakh from him and threatened to telecast story against him for non-payment of the money, he said.
Joint forces arrested Munshi Torikul within two hours of filing of the case with Sadar police station.
Later, they handed him over to police in the evening when police produced him before court from where he was sent to jail.
The court ordered police to investigate the case and submit a report within seven days of the order.
Meanwhile, journalist Pinu fled from his house just after the incident.
Local journalists demanded immediate release of Munshi Torikul terming the case 'false'. They also demanded withdrawal of the case.
