HC orders accused OC to appear before lower court

A High Court (HC) bench has directed former Patkelghata Police Station officer-in-charge (OC) Kazi Mizanur Rahman, the charge sheeted accused in the sensational Sabiha Akhtar murder case, to appear before the lower court in Satkhira within four weeks when he appeared before the bench of the HC court seeking bail on May 21. Earlier on may 21, the accused appeared before the HC court bench with a prayer for bail and the court after a long hearing passed the order, says a report received here yesterday. As per directive, the accused is to appear before the lower court on or before June 21, sources said. On March 6 night, Sabiha Akhtar, the second wife of Kazi Mizanur Rahman, the then officer in charge (OC) of Patkelghata Police Station, succumbed to her injuries allegedly inflicted by her husband on March 4. The victim's mother Tayebunnesa, now a resident of North Shahjahanpur in Dhaka, submitted on March 9 an FIR (First Information Report) to Motijheel Police Station in Dhaka as she was unable to go to Satkhira due to old age ailments, Satkhira police said. Motijhheel police received the case on behalf of Patkelghata Police Station and sent it there to record the case, police said. After getting the FIR from Motijheel Police Station, Patkelghata Police Station authorities filed a case against him on March 10, police said. The investigation officer of the case, sub-inspector Ziaur Rahman Zia of Patkelghata Police Station, submitted the charge sheet against him before Satkhira Chief Judicial Magistrate's Court on May 9. OC Kazi Mizanur Rahman, who went into hiding shortly after the killing, was later suspended.
