12 hurt as students go berserk
Aggrieved students of Sirajganj University College yesterday staged demonstration, ransacked office, classrooms and vandalised furniture, demanding removal of a teacher, leaving 12 people including students and teachers injured.
The injured were admitted to Sirajganj Sadar hospital and local clinics. Of the injured condition of two is critical, doctor's said.
Students of botany department held rallies and press conference, formed human chain and staged token hunger strike and boycotted classes on several occasions during the last six months demanding removal of Prof Md Wazed Ali, head of the botany department, for his alleged corruption and irregularities.
Following the agitation, college Principal Abdur Rashid Mian on Monday gave transfer certificate to 70 students of botany department and got them out of college.
Protesting the incident, the students of 15 departments held a rally at the college ground yesterday morning and ransacked office and classrooms. They also vandalised furniture of the office and locked the door of the principal's office.
Police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control.
Additional police were deployed there to evade untoward incident as a tense situation was prevailed on the college campus, police said.
Wazed Ali had been involved in alleged corruption and irregularities including realisation of additional fees for years.
Two students were tortured allegedly by his hired men on November 22 last year.
Principal Abdur Rashid Mian earlier said he formed committee for probing the students' allegation against the teacher. The committee has found him guilty and written to higher authorities recommending his transfer, but to no effect so far, he said.
