Journo gets 2 yrs RI for extortion
A court here yesterday sentenced a journalist to suffer two years rigorous imprisonment (RI) in an extortion case.
The convict is Shah Mohammed Rony, 40, staff reporter of The Daily Korotoa. Speedy Trial Tribunal judge Noor Islam handed down the verdict.
Prosecution story, in brief, is that Rony demanded Tk 20,000 from Khorshed Alam, a businessman in Sadar upazila. Khorshed informed the matter to Rab. Later, Khorshed offered Rony Tk 5,000 with signature of a magistrate. The Rab team raided the regional office of Korotoa at CK Gosh Road in the district town on March 24. First class magistrate Shefali Begum was present during the drive. The team recovered Tk 5,000 from his possession and arrested him.
