1,500 people join UP 'open budget session' at remote Satkhira village

It was a different day for the villagers at Brahmmarajpur, a remote union in Satkhira Sadar upazila. About 1,500 people took part in the 'open budget session' of Brahmmarajpur Union Parisad (UP) for 2008-'09 fiscal yesterday. Held at the UP office, Brahmmarajpur UP chairman Shahidul Islam presented a budget of Tk 24, 33, 630 and replied to various questions of people. The programme, first of its kind in the area, was organised by two NGOs, Manusher Jonno Foundation and Agragati Sangstha. It was aimed at ensuring transparency and accountability of the local government institution. Satkhira deputy commissioner (DC) Md Kefayetullah was the chief guest while Sadar upazila nirbahi officer Akhtaruzzaman Talukdar and Agragati Sangstha director Abdus Sabur were present as special guests. He urged people to cooperate with local government leaders to implement various development programmes. Discussants stressed on transparency and accountability for implementing development programmes at the grass roots level. They also urged the government to allocate more fund for local government institutions from the national budget so that UPs can undertake more development projects independently.
