Hearing on Sylhet BNP chief Arif's case now on July 6
Sylhet Additional District and Sessions Judge Court has deferred the date for recording deposition of prosecution witnesses (PWs) in an extortion case filed against city BNP chief Ariful Haque Chowdhury.
The court fixed July 6 as the next date of hearing.
Sylhet City Corporation (SCC) contractor Haji Dilar Ahmed filed the case with Sylhet Kotwali Police Station on June 20 last year.
Dilar said he had to pay Tk 15 lakh as illegal toll to Arif on pressure from him in six cheques of Sonali Bank to ensure a work order for a road extension project work.
A loyal to former finance minister Saifur Rahman, Arif was convener of the SCC development sub-committee.
On investigation, Kotwali Police Station sub- inspector Nasimul Islam framed charge against the accused. The court completed recording deposition of seven PWs on June 30. Deposition of two other witnesses is likely to be recorded on July 6, court sources said.
Arif was awarded 10 years rigorous imprisonment for amassing wealth through corruption and illegal means by a court here on June 19. His absconding wife Shama Haque Chowdhury was also sentenced to suffer three years' imprisonment. Arif has been facing another case for evading tax.
