Rangpur University begins academic session this year
Six courses initially, adviser Hossain Zillur says
Rangpur University will begin academic activities from this year at rented establishments, Education and Commerce Advisor Hossain Zillur Rahman said here yesterday.
Six departments will be opened initially. “Students will be admitted to Bengali, English, Mathematics, Economics, Computer Science and BBA courses and within five years eleven more subjects will be opened in the university”, he said at a view-exchange meeting with civil society members at the conference room of the Deputy Commissioner after visiting the site for the university near Carmichael College.
“We are looking for renting a big establishment where we can run classes and administrative activities temporarily. Hopefully, we will get it.” he said.
The education ministry has taken all preparations to begin academic activities immediately after announcement of H.S.C result this year, Zillur said.
The government has taken all steps to begin academic activities as per a cabinet decision taken on February 2, he said.
Earlier, the advisor along with district officials and members of the civil society visited the proposed site for Rangpur University.
Chief Advisor Fakhruddin Ahmed in a press briefing after the February 2 cabinet meeting in Rangpur declared that a full-fledged public university would be set up in Rangpur.
Accordingly, a project was taken up by the ministry of education.
The ministry formed a committee to prepare a master plan for the university, which will be presented on July 10, Zillur told yesterday's meeting.
“We must not waste agricultural land. We preferred fallow land to set up the university. Primarily, we have chosen 75 acres of land beside Rangpur Carmichael College, which is lying unused.”
Former principal of Carmichael College Dr. Rezaul Hoque, Rangpur Municipality Chairman Abdur Rouf Manik, Rangpur Chamber of Commerce and Industry President Mostafa Azad Choudhury also spoke at the view-exchange meeting.
Rezaul Hoque hailed the caretaker for taking steps to begin academic activities of Rangpur University this year.
Abdur Rouf Manik said, people of Rangpur will remain grateful to the caretaker government for its initiative to launch Rangpur University.
People hope that the government will create Rangpur divion comprising eight northern districts, he added.
With launching of academic activities of Rangpur University, a long cherished desire of people of the region will be fulfilled, the speakers said.
