Villagers have repaired about one km flood protection embankment along the Teesta at Nilarpar in Mornea union under Gangachara upazila. About 3000 people from seven villages in the union worked whole day yesterday and repaired the embankment by dumping sand bags. People of all ages irrespective of religion and party identity took part in the gigantic work, assisted by CARE, Bangladesh. Chairman of Mornea Union Parishad Shamsul Alam said, repair of on the embankment will save about 20,000 families of Mornea, Haragachh and Kounia. The area will also be protected from flood as Teesta is swelling for the last two days. Teesta began to rise from Sunday evening. The river rose about 35 cm above the danger mark at Dalia in last 24 hours. The UP chairman said the flood protection embankment at Nilarpar was damaged by last year's flood, inundating the whole area and affecting about 20,000 families. Crops on 3000 hectors were also damaged. The decision to repair the embankment by volunteer labour with the technical support of CARE Bangladesh was taken earlier.
