Prepare to face climate change, raise food production
Adviser CS Karim tells Eso Bangladesh Gori meeting
Agriculture and Water Resources Adviser Dr CS Karim yesterday said the nation should get ready to deal with challenges from nature amid climate change and frequent flood, cyclone and other disasters.
He was addressing a discussion organised by Chittagong district administration on the occasion of Eso Bangladesh Gori “road show carnival” at Chittagong MA Aziz Stadium.
Eighty lakh tonnes of potato was harvested this year against 50 lakh tonnes of the previous year and the practice of taking potato along with rice everyday would help lessen pressure on rice, he said.
“If we can get an international market for potato the country would be able to earn foreign currency while the farmers would also be benefited,” the adviser said, adding that a total of 1.75 crore lakh tonnes of rice was harvested this year.
Five people of Chittagong were selected as “Sada Moner Manush” and awarded crests for their contribution in the society.
They are Chittagong City Corporation acting Mayor M Manjur Alam, Chittagong Women Chamber of Commerce and Industries President Monwara Hakim Ali, Kabir Steel Ltd Proprietor Mohammad Shahjahan, industrialist Abdus Salam and Rauzan Unnayan Parishad President Ahsanul Haider Babul.
Chittagong Deputy Commissioner Ashraf Shamim presided over the discussion while Chittagong Divisional Commissioner Hossain Jamil, Chittagong Range Deputy Inspector General of Police AKM Shahidul Haque and Mobile Phone Operator Banglalink Chief Executive Officer Mohammad Rashid Khan spoke on the occasion, among others.
The guests also handed over prizes among the winners of essay and debate competitions held on the occasion of the road show.
Following distribution of potatoes among 20 distressed people, the adviser inaugurated the daylong fair on the Stadium premises by releasing balloons.
He visited the stalls opened by different ministries.
A cultural programme was also held where artistes of Shilpakala Academy, Shishu Academy and guest performers participated.
The road show will leave for Cox's Bazar at 7:00am today.
