Holding local body polls earlier not unconstitutional
Ershad tells Khulna party meeting
Former president Jatiya Party (JP) Chairman HM Ershad yesterday said holding of local body polls before national election is not unconstitutional.
Drive against corruption and separation of judiciary from the executive are two of the many 'grand successes' achieved by this government, he said during his address as chief guest in Khulna divisional conference of the party held at the Zila Parishad hall in the city.
Appreciating the Election Commission for making a faultless voter list, the JP leader expressed hope that the next national elections will be held as per schedule.
He called upon the people to vote him to power in the next election to give him another chance to serve the people and the country.
The JP leader said his party is still in the grand alliance led by Awami League.
He blamed the past BNP-led four-party alliance for looting wealth of the country and harbouring Islamist militants.
Ershad urged the caretaker government not to send detained political persons abroad who want to go there in the name of medical treatment.
He also urged the government to bring absconding politicians back to the country for trial as accused in corruption charges.
Among others, former prime minister Kazi Zafar Ahmed, JP Secretary General Ruhul Amin Howlader, presidium members Anisul Islam Mahmud, Ziauddin Bablu, central Organising Secretary Abdul Gaffar Biswas, Khulna district JP President Mahananda Das and General Secretary Shafiqul Islam Madhu, addressed the conference presided over by JP Presidium Member HM Golam Reza.
