3 quit KCC polls race protesting criminals' participation
Three candidates for councillor posts in Khulna City Corporation (KCC) have withdrawn from the polls race in protest against participation of a few people who are 'hated by peace-loving people and wanted by law enforcers'.
The three candidates -- Jahangir Hossain and Liaquat Hossain of ward No 4 and Kazi Golam Mustafa of ward No 17 -- submitted their petitions for withdrawal to Returning Officer Md Mohsin Ali, also deputy election commissioner, on Thursday evening.
Leaders of Khulna Citizens Forum (KCF) met Returning Officer Md Mohsin Ali and Khulna Metropolitan Police Commissioner Helaluddin Badri the same day.
The KCF leaders told the two officials that three mayoral candidates and a few other candidates for councillorship have been violating election code of conduct.
Expressing grave concern over the situation, they said if the wanted criminals are allowed to participate in the KCC polls, it would create obstacles to holding free and fair election in the areas concerned.
Holding offices of public representatives by such people will mean return of repression on the city dwellers, they said.
The KCF leaders suggested intervention of the returning officer and the KMP commissioner to take necessary steps to revoke their councillor posts if they win in the polls race.
KCF Chairperson Sheikh Abdul Kayyum, Secretary General Sheikh Mosharaf Hossain, leaders Badiar Rahman, Shahin Jamal, Shutapa Bedgya, Chaman Akter, Mozammel Hossain Howlader and Praddut Rudro Chaity met the returning officer and the KMP commissioner.
