Production in three state-owned Crescent Jute Mills, Platinum Jubilee Jute Mills and Star Jute Mills in Khulna remained suspended from 9:00am to 12:00 noon yesterday as over two thousand workers staged sit-in on Khalishpur BIDC Road to press home their eight-point demands. The demands include payment of their outstanding dues including weekly wages and lay-off benefits, increase in dearness allowance, reinstatement of all retrenched workers, allocation of necessary fund to mills to purchase raw jute and absorption of badl (casual) workers into permanent category. Khulna regional unit of newly launched organisation styled 'Nationalised Jute Mills Workers' Development Committee' called the sit-in programme. Later at a rally held at Khalishpur, workers' leaders warned the BJMC chairman of a tough movement if their demands are not met by July 20. They also demanded an investigation into assets of the officers of state-owned jute mills and BJMC and CBA leaders of the jute mills. CBA leaders Sohrab Hossain of Crescent Jute Mills, Matiar Rahman of Platinum Jubilee Jute Mills and Ruhul Amin of Star Jute Mills addressed the rally presided over by committee convenor Gazi Masum Ahmed.
